Cystitis Q & A

What is cystitis?

Interstitial cystitis, or painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition in which you feel the urge to urinate more frequently and with a smaller amount of urine in your bladder. Often, the pressure on your bladder becomes painful and can cause pain in other areas of your pelvis as well. The pain ranges from mild discomfort to more severe pain, accompanied by a frequent urge to urinate – up to 60 times a day.

Some women who suffer from cystitis also experience painful sexual intercourse, and a worsening of symptoms when a urinary tract infection occurs. The chronic symptoms of cystitis can lead to a decline in intimacy, emotional problems, and may interfere with your daily activities on a regular basis.

What causes interstitial cystitis?

The exact cause of interstitial cystitis isn’t known, but there are many factors that can contribute to it. You may have a defect in your bladder lining that causes irritation. Also, those with other chronic pain disorders such as fibromyalgia or irritable bowel syndrome, or an autoimmune condition, seem to be at higher risk for cystitis.

How is cystitis treated?

Although there’s no cure for this condition, the team at V-Revive can help you effectively manage your cystitis symptoms so you experience less pain and discomfort. Since many women with interstitial cystitis experience chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs), treatment options may help to improve chronic UTIs, too. This occurs by improving the pH opf the vagina back to a more acidic state so it can better protect itself from bacteria.

The V-Revive team offers state-of-the-art laser procedures including the CO2RE® Intima laser and MonaLisa Touch® laser therapy. These nonsurgical treatment options use the power of laser energy to safely heat vaginal tissue to help relieve symptoms of interstitial cystitis.

How does MonaLisa Touch laser therapy work?

During the MonaLisa Touch procedure, a trained V-Revive medical specialist inserts a probe into your vagina. The probe delivers a safe, painless amount of thermal energy to the vaginal walls. This stimulates a healing response that tightens and repairs intravaginal tissue resulting in more moisture and elacticity.

The procedure takes less than five minutes, and you typically need three treatments spaced six weeks apart for the maximum benefit. Side effects are minimal, there’s no downtime (other than no sex for a week), and you can have the MonaLisa Touch procedure done in V-Revive’s office.

How does the CO2RE Intima treatment work?

The CO2RE Intima treatment is also a nonsurgical procedure that can help relieve vaginal dryness, pain, and itching. It can also restore vaginal tone and elacticity. The CO2RE uses laser energy to stimulate the vaginal walls so they repair themselves and grow new tissue. Like the MonaLisa Touch, an intravaginal wand delivers safe, gentle laser energy in about 5 minutes, with minimal or no discomfort.
